Purpose of Genesis: To record creation, man's rebellion, and God's plan to redeem him.
Genesis means "origin" or "beginning".
Moses wrote Genesis around 1450-1410 BC.
It's setting is the region presently known as the Middle East; key places: Eden, Mt. Ararat, Babel, Ur, Haran, Shechem, Hebron, Beersheeba, Behel, and Egypt.
Key people: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.
God's original intent (Genesis 1:36,v27) was that man be made in His image. He was created in God's image with Adam.
The first sacrifice (3:21) the concept that blood had to be shed to cover sin. God made it clear from the beginning that sin required death.
The tree of life (3:22-23) later became flesh and dwelt among us.
